Thanks for your comment. Please forgive me as I am an absolute novice/beginner with soft pastel drawing. I'm not familiar with the appropriate terminology.

This was my first attempt at a more complicated piece ... that is, a focused glass with contents on a journal in the foreground and an unfocused background containing a fireplace, walls, lighting, etc.

I would appreciate thoughts on whether or not that focused/unfocused contrast worked.
